Wordpress 2.6.5 has just been released this morning. It’s a recommended upgrade as it includes 1 security fix and 3 bugs. This new version is a minor upgrade from WP2.6.3 so the upgrade is almost as easy as the previous WP2.6.3 upgrade.

GMail Mobile 2.0 was released on 23rd Oct and I upgraded it immediately. The newer version is still very small in size (256kb), but now supports more J2ME phones (Nokia N95, BlackBerry, etc.) with over 35 languages for users to select.

Newport Beach-based CircleUp, which provides Web 2.0-style group messaging services, said today that it has launched a new platform to help groups communicate with their members. The new platform–billed SmartMessage–helps groups send messages among members and others. As part of the announcement, CircleUp said it has linked with San Diego-based Active Network’s eteamz division, which will deploy the new tool throughout its web sites. Financial impact of the Active Network deal was not disclosed. CircleUp said that its new platform is targeted at partners that serve groups in the participation sports, nonprofit, education, faith based and club / association markets. The platform includes APIs for contact and single sign-on integration, along with premium features such as wireless support and affiliate commissions which are shared with partners. CircleUp’s application allows organizers to send out messages to a group, and then manage responses through a web-based interface, rather than having to deal with individual email responses. Pasadena-based Big Stage Entertainment, which is developing 3D avatar technology, said today that it has opened up its proprietary 3-D facial modeling system to third parties. According to the firm, it will make its technology available via a program called PortableYou, to enable third parties to integrate the technology into video games, virtual worlds, web sites, mobile applications, and more. The firm said the program will include application programming interfaces (APIs), code samples, method, and reference libraries. In conjunction with the new program, Big Stage said that it has signed on virtual world developer Icarus Studios, and virtual conferencing firm The Venue Network as two companies using the new APIs. Icarus Studios is a provider of white-label, massively multiplayer online games and virtual worlds; The Venue Network is a developer of yet-to-be-launched software for conducting virtual events. Seattle-based Amazon.com is extending its EC2 web services to Europe, the firm said late last night. According to Amazon Web Services LLC, the web services arm of Amazon.com, it now allows developers in Europe to operate Amazon EC2 instances in multiple zones in the EU. The firm said its new European Region will provide lower latency and closer operations for companies running services in the EU, in particular shortening the time required to boot and obtain a new virtual server instance. The services currently include Amazon’s Linux-based servers; the firm said it will be adding the firm’s new Windows Server and SQL Server support in the “near future.”

Clean Edge, Inc., a publisher of clean technology related publications with offices in Portland, said today that it has launched a new job site called Clean Edge Jobs, focused on the clean energy market. Clean Edge said that the new job board, which currently allows recruiters and companies to post jobs for free, was launched in conjunction with recruiting firm Hobbs & Towne. The firms said the job board is focused on job seekers, employers, and recruiters within the cleantech industry. Clean Edge is behind the Clean-Tech Investor Summit conference.

Newport Beach-based Conexant Systems said today that it has signed an agreement with Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) to manufacture, distribute, and support ADI’s PC audio codec product lines, including the hiring of ADI’s PC audio engineering support team. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. According to Conexant, ADI’s PC audio codec products engineering team will become part of its Imaging and PC Media Group in Waltham, Mass. ADI’s products are used for encoding and decoding digital data on personal computers. Conexant said the technology will be complementary to Conexant’s audio product profile, which also includes speakers-on-a-chip for personal computers, PC sound systems, speakers, and related products. Portland-based SplashCast, a provider of content syndication software, said this morning that it has signed on Hulu, the television-network backed effort to provide major TV shows, movies, and clips, as a customer. According to SplashCast, Hulu will use its video player to embed movie clips into social networking sites such as MySpace.com and Facebook. Financial impact of the deal was not disclosed. SplashCasts’s video player and related technology will be used to embed full episodes and clips from a selection of shows on Hulu, starting with what SplashCast described as 20 “popular” TV shows on the site. Additional shows will be added before the end of the year, according to SplashCast. The win with Hulu follows the opening of an LA office for the firm in July.

Los Angeles-based Hulu, which offers TV shows, movies, and clips from the major networks, is adding the ablity to embed Hulu clips on social networking sites such as MySpace.com and Facebook, in a new deal with content syndication service SplashCast. According to SplashCast, Hulu will use SplashCast to distribute its television shows and other content on MySpace.com and Facebook, as a way to reach the 15- to 34- year old audience. Los Angeles-based Emotive Communications, which is developing ringtone-based, entertainment products for the mobile market, said today that it has scored .25M in a second round of venture financing. The round was led by The Mayfield Fund, and also included prior investors D. E. Shaw Ventures and Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments. Emotive also said that it has acquired Sennari Entertainment, a provider of loyalty programs for the mobile market. Financial terms of the acquisition of Sennari were not disclosed. Sennari Entertainment was venture backed by more than M by Blacksmith Capital, Mayfield, Novak Biddle Venture Partners, and UV Partners. Emotive said the Sennari buy gives it access to Sennari’s mobile CRM and loyalty platform, and will be combined with its RingJam product for the entertainment media market.

San Diego-based Novatel Wireless, which develops broadband modems for connecting PCs and other devices to cell phone networks, said this morning that its President, Brad Weinert, has resigned, as of Monday. Reason for the sudden departure was not given. According to the firm, the Weinert’s responsibilities will be taken over by the company’s senior management team. Novatel’s hardware includes embedded cards, USB modems, modules, and other products for connecting PCs and other devices to 3G, 4G, CDMA, and GSM telecom networks. READ MORE>>

GigOptix LLC announced Tuesday that its merger with Bothell, Wash.-based Lumera Corp. is finally official. The combined company, GigOptix Inc., will be headquartered in Palo Alto, Calif., but will maintain satellite offices in Bothell and Zurich, Switzerland. The merger was originally announced on March 27. GigOptix’s principals approved the transaction more than eight months ago, but Lumera’s stockholders did not OK the deal until last Thursday. A manufacturer of electro-optical components for the communications industry, Lumera faced the possibility of its stock being de-listed; the firm had received two NASDAQ de-listing notices, the most recent of which coming in late November. GigOptix said the new company’s stock will be traded on the OTC Bulletin Board under the GGOX symbol.
